Discovering essential oils 5 years ago was a pivotal turning point in my life and health. They came at a time when nothing else seemed to work and provided my body with the support it needed to begin its healing journey. Some years later as my physical health plateaued I went in search of something to help break through to the next level, again essential oils showed up for me, but this time to support my self care and emotional dis-ease. As someone who suffers with anxiety oils have been especially beneficial in helping me feel calm, grounded or in some cases lifting my mood. Here are my top oils that I reach for in times of stress or anxiety. 1.Lavender Lavender oil is amazing for assisting with relaxation and calming which is why many use it as a sleep aid. For me, it helps to neutralise emotions and bring peace to my heart in times of stress or simply at the end of the day when my monkey mind is still in full force. Favourite way to use it: In an epsom salt bath before bed 2. Cedarwood This earthy oil grounds me almost immediately, known for its sedative effect it brings me back into my body and allows for a clearer space to move forward. Even when I’m not feeling particularly anxious, but have a big day or a lot going on, I turn to cedarwood. Favourite way to use it: Applied topically (diluted) over my chest or on the bottom of my feet. 3. Clary Sage Hormones play a big part in our emotional ups and downs and this is my go to oil to support balanced hormones. Clary Sage is strengthening yet relaxing so it can be used for supporting mental and nervous fatigue as well as helping with calming the mind and body. I reach for this anytime I’m feeling out of sorts and also regularly as I finish up my cycle each month to support shifting hormones as well as pain management. Favourite way to use it: In a diluted roller bottle over my lower back and abdomen. 4. Wild Orange or Tangerine Both of these oil are amazing for helping to boost my mood while also alleviating nervous tension. Considered to have an antidepressant effect, they work well to lift me out of a funk or even just start my day off right. Without carrying extra stress in my body and with added energy I’m able to stay more focused and get more done! Favourite way to use: In my diffuser lifting the mood of the whole house. 5. Ylang Ylang This is another oil that I reach for in times of high stress and anxiety, as it’s known for its ability to slow over rapid breathing and heart beat. It’s a great one to pair with any of the oils above for a power bomb of mood stability. It has a beautiful floral aroma which makes it a great option for a perfume that will also support your body and enhance the mood of those around you. Favourite way to use: In a diluted roller bottle over my heart and pulse points.
